Review: The Mistletoe Promise by Richard Paul Evans

Author: Richard Paul Evans
Genre: Christmas fiction, contemporary
Pages: 272
Published: 2014

Richard Paul Evans' novels are generally formulaic and cheesy... but I absolutely love them and can't get enough! This is my 6th RPE book and it was just as good as all his others. As usual, the characters endure some kind of hardship to find hope.

In this story, we meet Elise Dutton, a broken woman with a secret past that eats at her and causes her pain and guilt. She is approached in the cafeteria by a stranger who works in her building, Nicholas, who essentially asks her if she would like to pretend to be his girlfriend for the holidays so neither of them have to be lonely. She agrees to this "mistletoe promise" contract and finds herself falling for him for real, a man with a secret of his own.

This book was sweet, hopeful, and perfect for Christmas, as are all of his novels. I look forward to reading his books every Christmas. Unlike most of his other holiday books, this one did not seem to be based off a biblical story (though I could be mistaken). I liked the contemporary feel of this one, as well as the touching love story and messages of redemption. Another winner from RPE! I can't wait to see what he comes up with next year.

4.5/5 stars!

Review: Shopaholic to the Stars by Sophie Kinsella

Author: Sophie Kinsella
Genre: Chick Lit, Humor,
Pages: 479
Published: 2014

Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) is back! This time she and her hubby Luke along with 2 year old daughter Minnie have moved to L.A. because Luke is handling the PR for the famous Sage Seymour. Becky can’t wait to start living the A-list lifestyle, complete with celebrity sightings, yoga retreats, and shopping trips to Rodeo Drive. But she really hopes to become a personal stylist—Sage’s personal stylist—if only Luke would set up an introduction. Then, unexpectedly, Becky is offered the chance to dress Sage’s archrival, and though things become a bit more complicated, it’s a dream come true!

I have enjoyed all of Sophie Kinsella's books, who also writes as Madeleine Wickham. Her Shopaholic series is really a fun read and I laugh out loud at several points in each book. I actually listen to the books on audio because I love to hear them read in a British accent.

This book ended differently than most of her Shopaholic books with a cliffhanger.

Review: Cure for the Common Breakup by Beth Kendrick

Author: Beth Kendrick
Genre: Chick lit, women's fiction
Pages: 336
Published: 2014

I loved this book!

Summer Benson, flight attendant extraordinaire, is your typical party girl who loves a good time and hates any kind of commitment, be it to a man or to a place. After a tragic accident though, Summer finds herself in a terrible place, feeling heartbroken and lost. Not knowing what else to do, she remembers seeing an ad for Black Dog Bay, a small tourist town in Delaware that caters to the heartbroken with places such as the Eat Your Heart Out Bakery and the Better Off Bed-and-Breakfast, and heads there right away. Almost immediately, Summer is accepted with open arms by the residents of the town, including Hattie Huntington, the most hated, evil old woman the town has ever seen. For the first time ever, Summer feels at home and doesn’t feel like running. She’s also possibly, maybe found love with a man she probably shouldn’t be falling for but she’s falling anyway, and life is looking up. Then Hattie, who is seeking revenge for a long ago wrongdoing, drops a bomb on Summer that may force her to lose everything she has only just started to find…

So. I really enjoyed this book and FLEW through it in a matter of days, which doesn’t happen all that often as I’m a fairly slow reader. I loved everything about it from the small town setting, to the vibrant cast of characters, to Summer’s witty one liners and hilarious attitude.

Black Dog Bay seems like an amazing place and I kind of wish it were real and that I lived there amongst the awesome locals (well, mostly awesome. Hattie was NOT so awesome). I love, love, love small towns and have always wished I lived in one because of the sense of community and kinship, and this fictional small town was no exception. It was full of sweet, little local businesses run by equally sweet people who welcomed Summer like an old friend. Despite her former wild, partying ways and globetrotting lifestyle, Summer quickly falls in love with the town and its people, most notably with Dutch, the stern but uber hot mayor who needs a little more fun in his life. Once Summer manages to get under his skin, both of their lives start to improve for the better.

I loved the characters in this story. All of the heartbreak themed businesses were run by local women who seemed both like great friends AND a lot of fun. I would have loved to pull up a bar stool and join them in their frequent gossip sessions at the Whinery Bar. Summer was a fantastic character who really cracked me up and always had just the right thing to say in response to any of Hattie’s nasty quips. Hattie, on the other hand, was dreadful. She was very spiteful about something that had happened many years ago, and had since been torturing basically the whole town with her nasty demeanor and constant complaints. She and Summer tend to clash on most occasions, but when Hattie gives Summer an ultimatum that can destroy everything for both her and the entire town, she is torn about what to do.

I could go on but I’ll close this by saying if you like chick lit, women’s fiction, sweet stories, or funny stories, I’d highly recommend you check this one out. I’m already itching to read my next Beth Kendrick story!

Cookbook Review: Sweet (Food Network)

Author: Food Network
Genre: Cookbook, nonfiction
Pages: 336
Published: 2014

I received a copy of Sweet: Our Best Cupcakes, Cookies, Candy, and More from Blogging for Books for an honest review. I am a person that really enjoys cooking, and looked forward to seeing this book since I am a fan of the Food Network magazine. The cookbook did not disappoint. The book is organized in eight sections; cupcakes & whoopie pies, cookies & bars, candy & snacks, pies & crumbles, fake-out cakes, show-off cakes, frozen treats, and holiday desserts. The only chapter that I probably will not make anything from is the "fake-out" cakes - although they look cool, I would rather focus on desserts that taste great and appeal to my family and friends. One general thing I liked about the cookbook is the nice, clear photograph of the recipe - it is nice to see how the finished product should look! There are several recipes that drew me in, and that I will definitely try. The Red Velvet Whoopie Pies look amazing, and I think they would make a great holiday dessert. My family also loves oatmeal-raisin cookies, and I was glad to see a chewy cookie recipe included in the book. There are a number of trendy recipes that include bacon, etc. along with classics like lemon bars. I recently ate a macaroon at a bakery in town, and was happy to see two different macaroon recipes included. The salted pretzel-marshmallow bars will be something I make for my son in college - he will love them! The jam shortbread bars look easy, and anyone could probably make them with ingredients they have on hand. Cinnamon raisin-nut toffee would make a great office Christmas gift.

There are few recipes that look great for the fall - apple cider doughnuts, bourbon praline cake, and chocolate-toffee pecan tart. The watermelon squares look like a great summertime treat! If you have a banana lover in the house, you might want to make the banana-marshmallow meringue pie - it looks really good. There is a nice, basic ice cream crunch cake recipe that would make a great birthday cake. It looks just like the ones you buy from Carvel. There are some interesting holiday recipes, including one to make your own conversation hearts from scratch! A little ambitious for me - but nice if you want to "Get your Martha On." I will definately make the star studded berry tarts on my next patriotic holiday. There are also fun side notes, like suggested chocolate dipped treats, or varieties of candy apples. All in all, the cookbook is fun, has clear photos and instructions, and has a good variety of treats to make.

Eyes on You by Kate White

Title: Eyes on You
Author: Kate White
Genre: Suspense
Pages: 308
Published: 2014

"After losing her on-air job two years ago, television host Robin Trainer has fought her way back and now she’s hotter than ever. With her new show climbing in the ratings and her first book a bestseller, she’s being dubbed a media double threat.

But suddenly, things begin to go wrong. Small incidents at first: a nasty note left in her purse; her photo shredded. But the obnoxious quickly becomes threatening when the foundation the makeup artist uses burns Robin’s face. It wasn’t an accident—someone had deliberately doctored with the product.

An adversary with a dark agenda wants to hurt Robin, and the clues point to someone she works with every day. While she frantically tries to put the pieces together and unmask this hidden foe, it becomes terrifyingly clear that the person responsible isn’t going to stop until Robin loses everything that matters to her . . . including her life."

I always enjoy Kate White’s books. This one kept me guessing until the end. - Cathy H.

Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Title: Gone Girl
Author: Gillian Flynn
Genre: Mystery, suspense
Pages: 419
Published: 2012

A LOT of our staff members have read Gone Girl since its release in 2012. With all the hold requests coming in for the book, we were all pretty curious. I have to tell you, our staff is very split on this book! A few of us (such as myself, Stephanie) absolutely LOVED it. A few of the staff absolutely hated it. A few of the staff couldn't even finish it. Below are my personal thoughts about the book which I reviewed on my own blog last week:

Let me just be real here and say that I was pretty darn tired last week. And why was that? Because of Gone Girl! I had WAY too many late nights reading, staying up way past my bedtime racing through this book until I literally could not keep my eyes open any longer. This book is crazy in the best way possible and I’m SO glad it was my book club pick for the month, finally prompting me to pick it up.

So what’s the story? It’s a big old mystery surrounding the disappearance of Amy Dunne on her and Nick’s five year wedding anniversary. Just like that, she is gone from their home and no one knows where she is. After unsuccessful attempts to find her, Nick’s odd behavior and the strange crime scene in the house make him the prime and only suspect in the case. Through multiple narrations (Nick’s point of view as well as Amy’s diary entries), the whole twisted story is eventually revealed.

Okay, this book REALLY lived up to the hype for me. I know it tends to be either a love it or hate it kind of book with no real in-between on how people feel. I obviously am in the LOVED IT party. It was an amazing mystery that kept getting stranger and darker as the story progressed. The reader really has no clue whether or not it was Nick or someone else for a huge portion of the story, and Flynn manages to make the mystery incredibly hard to solve and unravel. The characters were not at all transparent, and nothing is given away until Flynn wants you to know. I don’t want to say much about the character’s personalities, because I don’t want to reveal anything, but they will leave you in shock at every twist and turn.

While I know many people hate this book simply because they hate the characters, I’d have to disagree. You can like a book without liking the characters, especially if the author created them that way on purpose, which obviously was the case here. This story wouldn’t have been this story if the characters were any different than they were.

This story and everything about it was incredibly complex and rich. The characters were crazy and I felt like I was in the middle of the media frenzy myself. I can’t say much else except that if you are looking for a shocking read that you really won’t want to put down, pick this up immediately. It consumed my thoughts the whole few days I was reading it and I was constantly itching to pick it back up and discover what would happen next. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I still can’t! This is probably my favorite read of the year so far and definitely the most gripping book I’ve ever read. I declared a book hangover after finishing it because I know I may never read another book quite like this one again. I highly recommend it.
