Review: More Things In Heaven and Earth by Jeff High

Author: Jeff High
Genre: Contemporary fiction
Pages: 358
Published: 2013

This book is the story of a doctor named Luke Bradford, fresh out of school, who moves to the town of Watervalley in rural Tennessee to begin his career.  This is not Luke’s ideal career choice, as he would rather be doing research.  However, student loans need to be paid back so he takes a job as Watervalley's only doctor.  Luke is determined from the start to dislike the small town and his new job, since he believes he has a bigger world view and sees himself working in a more “happening” place.  As Luke becomes more familiar with how the town works, and the quirky people that live there, he quickly sees that his assumption of Watervalley’s residents being “simple” is not at all accurate.  I found it very easy to take to each character, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Luke’s housekeeper, and each of the other Watervalley residents featured in this first novel.  Luke has had his own challenges in his life, and soon learns the reason why his family wanted him to experience life as a doctor in a small town.  The quirkiness of the town and the depth of the characters make this novel so incredibly heartwarming.  I found it similar to All Creatures Great and Small, except the patients in this novel are human.  I look forward to the next novel of Watervalley.

Mrs. Lincoln's Rival by Jennifer Chiaverini

Author: Jennifer Chiaverini
Genre: Historical fiction
Pages: 419
Published: 2014

In Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival, Chiaverini reveals the famous First Lady’s very public social and political contest with Kate Chase Sprague, memorialized as “one of the most remarkable women ever known to Washington society.” (Providence Journal)

Beautiful, intelligent, regal, and entrancing, young Kate Chase stepped into the role of establishing her thrice-widowed father in Washington society and as a future presidential candidate. Her efforts were successful enough that The Washington Star declared her “the most brilliant woman of her day. None outshone her.”

None, that is, but Mary Todd Lincoln. Though Mrs. Lincoln and her young rival held much in common—political acumen, love of country, and a resolute determination to help the men they loved achieve greatness—they could never be friends, for the success of one could come only at the expense of the other. When Kate Chase married William Sprague, the wealthy young governor of Rhode Island, it was widely regarded as the pinnacle of Washington society weddings. President Lincoln was in attendance. The First Lady was not.

Review: Left by Tamar Ossowski

Title: Left
Author: Tamar Ossowski
Genre: Women's fiction, mystery
Pages: 240
Published: 2013

Therese Wolley is living a reasonably normal life as a single mother of two girls, Matilda, the troubled older sister and Franny, the younger autistic sister. One day she sees something in the newspaper that makes her run away with her older daughter, leaving Franny behind with a trusted friend. It is told in alternating chapters from the viewpoint of Therese, Matilde, and Franny. The reason she leaves is not made clear until the end, so I was anxious to finish to find out why this mother would choose to only take one of her daughters with her.

This book was kind of weird and kind of sad, but overall was a good read.

Review: My Story by Elizabeth Smart

Title: My Story
Author: Elizabeth Smart
Genre: Memoir, true crime
Pages: 308
Published: 2013

It's always hard for me to rate and review books that contain such personal stories and ordeals, like this one.

Many of you probably remember the story of Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home in 2002. She was 14 years old and taken captive by Brian David Mitchell and his wife, and held in captivity for nine long months in outdoor "camps." She was abused both mentally and physically, starved, sexually abused, and made to live in fear with the constant threats made by her captors who convinced her that if she ever tried to escape, her family would be killed.

It was extremely heartbreaking and fascinating to finally hear the whole story directly from Elizabeth. I was shocked by all the things that she endured and how delusional Mitchell was. It sickened me how he pretended and faked his way through life. He pretended he was a prophet and that he was doing all that he was doing because he was told to do so by God. He "preached" on the street for money, stole things from stores, and convinced people he was doing it all in the name of religion. He was a phony and a criminal and how he got away with it for so long, I will never understand.

This account of Elizabeth's ordeal is quite detailed and all encompassing. If you're interested in following crime cases, as I am, this would be a good book for you to pick up. I'm also planning on reading some other books about this case from other authors just to get other perspectives, but this is obviously the definitive account and one that I'd recommend.

My Rating: 4/5

Review: The Wrong Girl by Hank Phillippi Ryan

Author: Hank Phillippi Ryan
Genre: Suspense
Pages: 366
Published: 2013

This was a new author to me, although she has written four other mystery novels and another book, The Other Woman, featuring reporter Jane Ryland and detective Jake Brogan. In The Wrong Girl, Jane is asked by a friend to look into an adoption agency who is allegedly reuniting birth parents with the wrong people. Her friend Tucker is convinced that the woman the agency states is her birth mother is not and believes there is something fraudulent going on. While looking into this matter, Jane gets involved in the murder that Jake is investigating. There are a lot of twists and turns and I really liked this book. It might have been helpful to have read the first one before, but it was still enjoyable. I would definitely read from this author again.

Review: Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly

Author: Paula Daly
Genre: Suspense, mystery
Pages: 312
Published: 2013

This is Paula Daly's debut novel and it has been very popular. It was very well written and grabbed me from the first couple of pages. The main character, Lisa Kallisto, is a super busy working mom, struggling to juggle everything in her life. Her best friend's 13-year-old daughter goes missing when she was supposedly staying with Lisa. She is wracked with guilt and is determined to help find the missing girl. As she begins to investigate, she discovers that not everything is what it appears to be.

This book was full of suspense and I was eager to get to the end to find out what happened. There was a side story involving the female investigator that didn't really go anywhere and could have probably been left out, but other than that, a very impressive first novel by this author. I will definitely look forward to her next.
